Byram Advisory Group

About

Byram Advisory Group helps finance teams put AI to work without giving up the controls that keep the numbers defensible.

Most finance leaders have stopped asking whether AI can do the work. It demonstrably can. What they ask now is what happens at close, at audit, and in diligence when a machine did part of the work and nobody can show who approved it. That single question stalls deployments that have already been budgeted and bought.

We come at this as operators rather than analysts. Founder Owen Byram spent his career in private equity finance managing the close and building the reporting infrastructure on top of it, then spent a year an agentic accounting platform on QuickBooks Online that runs in production today. Every control we recommend is one we had to build, defend and test ourselves.

The work is straightforward to describe. We decide what the AI is allowed to touch, build the controls around it, prove those controls actually fire, and leave behind evidence an auditor, a lender or an acquirer will accept. Draft, never post. A separate approver. Approval bound to the item rather than the session. Shadow mode before anything goes live. Refusal tests that confirm a control still fires after a vendor ships an update.

We also say plainly what does not work. Our field guide names what is real in AI for accounting and what is marketing, including the things we got wrong first.

Free, and genuinely free: The Field Guide to AI for Accounting Firms, a twenty-minute read written for people who close books rather than for engineers. It comes with seven standing instructions you can paste into ChatGPT or Claude in about ninety seconds. After that, every answer marks which figures came from you, which it worked out and which it assumed, and ends by telling you what it could not verify.
